What search engines take into account when assessing the quality of any given backlink:

• Page Rank of the webpage linking to you (The higher their PageRank, the higher the value of the link).
• Is the Page a link farm (Google will give you a penalty if the website linking to you is a suspected or known link farm).
• The text appearing within the link and its relevance to the content on the page being linked to (If you're a sculptor then you want the text to read "Affordable Sculpting Services" rather than "Click Here" which means nothing to Google.
• Is the page linking to you in the same industry or a related industry? (Google doesn't care as much about an ice cream company linking to your plumbing business as it does about a plumbing repair site linking to you).
• Is the backlink one-way or reciprical? (If you don't have to trade links to get someone to link to you, it looks to google like just that: an unsolicited link which is much more valuable).
• How many other links are on the page? If there are 50 other links on the page you all will get a small portion of that page's link value. You can easily see why you would only be one of few or the only external link on any given page.
